Northeast India Motorcycle Tour — Tribal Frontier
What This Route Is
This is riding through the territories of 12 or more distinct tribal groups across four states. Many of these communities had no contact with the rest of India until the 1950s. The roads in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland are among the most demanding in India. The culture changes every 100–150 km (62–93 miles). No other Indian route produces that kind of shift this consistently.
Arunachal Pradesh requires a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for foreign riders. RAP cannot be applied for independently — it must go through a registered operator. That requirement keeps casual tourist traffic off these roads. Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP), applied at arunachalpradesh.gov.in or at the Bhalukpong gate. We handle both.
One date worth planning a departure around: the Hornbill Festival at Kisama Heritage Village, 12 km (7.5 miles) south of Kohima, first week of December. All 16 Naga tribes perform simultaneously. Book Kohima accommodation 3–4 months ahead for that window.
Why This Route?
The permits keep the traffic down. The terrain sets the pace. Culture shifts every district.
Expedition Stats
- Best Season: October – April
- Duration: 14–18 Days
- Difficulty: Advanced
- Distance: ~1,800 km (1,118 miles)
- Max Altitude: 4,170 m (13,681 ft) — Sela Pass variant
Route Spine — 16 Days
Days 1–2: Guwahati — Permits, Bike Handover, Route Setup
All permit processing runs from Guwahati before departure. ILP for Indian nationals is issued in 2–4 hours at the Bhalukpong gate or online in advance, and specifies the districts you will enter. RAP for foreign riders requires 4–7 days lead time, handled before your arrival. First fuel check and mechanical run on the Himalayan 450 on NH-27 before heading east.
Days 3–4: Guwahati → Kaziranga → Jorhat (215 km / 134 miles, NH-37)
The road runs through Assam's tea garden belt near Nagaon — rows of chest-height bushes on both sides for the better part of 40 km (25 miles). Book the Kohora range jeep safari the evening before: one-horned rhino sighting probability is high, and usable light starts before 7am. Continue to Jorhat for the Neemati Ghat ferry connection. This is the last stretch of reliable tarmac before the terrain changes.
Day 5: Majuli Island — Neemati Ghat Ferry Crossing
Bikes load onto a flat wooden barge at Neemati Ghat at 7:00am. The crossing takes 75 minutes. The Brahmaputra runs 15 km (9 miles) wide here at flood season — think of a Mississippi River crossing before bridges existed, scaled to a river that fills bank to bank in monsoon. Majuli is the world's largest river island. Visit Kamalabari Satra and Auniati Satra — two Vaishnavite monastery complexes operating continuously at this location for over 300 years.
Days 6–7: Majuli → Dibrugarh → Pasighat → Roing (entry into Arunachal Pradesh)
ILP checkpoint at the Jonai gate — documents checked before you continue. The road surface changes sharply after Pasighat: alternating sections of tarmac, broken tarmac, and river gravel. Over the 143 km (89 miles) from Pasighat to Roing, I counted 11 sections where the surface dropped completely to river stone. Jungle thickens. The Siang Valley opens to the left. Idu Mishmi tribal territory from this point.
Days 8–9: Roing → Tezu → Mon, Nagaland (Konyak Territory)
Ride south along the Lohit River from Roing through Tezu. Traffic outside of BRO construction trucks drops to near zero. Cross into Mon district, Nagaland. Mon town is the centre of Konyak Naga territory. Elders here still carry the tattooed facial markings from that era — a warrior history documented well into the mid-20th century. Two nights at a community homestay in Mon.
Day 10: Longwa Village Day Ride from Mon Base
Longwa Village straddles the India–Myanmar border — the chief's longhouse is bisected by the boundary line. Written permission required from the DC Mon office; arrange the day before visiting the village. The tattooed Konyak elders still living here carry those markings.
Day 11: Mon → Mokokchung via Doyang Reservoir Road
The Doyang Reservoir road runs 30 km (19 miles) along the reservoir with forest on both sides and almost no other vehicles. The surface was built for Doyang Dam construction access and has been maintained since — it is noticeably better than anything else in this part of Nagaland. Mokokchung is Ao Naga territory. The dialect, food, and dress change from Mon.
Days 12–13: Mokokchung → Kohima (Angami Naga Territory)
Garrison Hill in Kohima was the 1944 WWII battle site where British-Indian and Japanese forces fought from positions under 50 metres apart. The Kohima War Cemetery sits on that hill in the middle of the modern city — white cross markers in identical rows, structurally similar to American military cemeteries in Normandy, except this one is enclosed by a functioning town. December first week: Hornbill Festival at Kisama Heritage Village, 12 km (7.5 miles) south — all 16 Naga tribes perform simultaneously.
Days 14–15: Kohima → Shillong → Cherrapunji, Meghalaya
Re-enter Meghalaya through Assam. Shillong sits at 1,496 m (4,908 ft) in the Khasi Hills — ML 05 Café near Police Bazaar is set up specifically for rider parking and has proper coffee. From Shillong, Cherrapunji (Sohra) is 60 km (37 miles) south on a limestone plateau road that drops over 1,000 m (3,281 ft). The hike to the Nongriat Living Root Bridge departs from Tyrna village, 8 km (5 miles) before Cherrapunji town — allow 4 hours return.
Day 16: Dawki River and Return to Guwahati (160 km / 99 miles)
Dawki sits on the Umngot River. The riverbed is visible clearly enough through the water that moored boats appear suspended over the stones. The descent road to Dawki drops 500 m (1,640 ft) in 12 km (7.5 miles) with the river visible the entire way down. Return via Jaintia Hills and Jowai on NH-6 for the Guwahati finish.

Food on the Route
- Assam — Nagaon and Jorhat belt: Jolpan breakfast stalls on the NH-37 service roads open by 6:30am — rice pithas (steamed rice cakes), black sesame ladoo, and Assam CTC tea served in steel glasses. Brewed from estate seconds, not export grade.
- Kaziranga area — Kaliabor Bypass dhaba: Bamboo-smoked meat with rice is the standard order here. If you see "naarikolor logot maas" on a handwritten board near the highway, order it: fish cooked in green coconut, specific to this belt.
- Mon, Nagaland — community homestay: Smoked meat, axone (fermented soybean), local rice beer (zutho). No menu. You eat what the family prepares. The axone smell is immediately distinctive — some riders remember Mon by that before anything they saw.
- Kohima — Diezephe Craft Village area: Smoked beef, bamboo shoot pickle, and fresh chilli paste on a Naga thali. The beer-smoked beef is not available outside Nagaland in this preparation. The chilli level is not decorative — ask before assuming.
- Shillong — Police Bazaar: Jadoh (smoked meat rice, Khasi staple) and local pineapple wine from roadside stalls. ML 05 Café is the one venue configured for motorcycle riders — parking, chargers, proper coffee.
- Cherrapunji — Tyrna village: Warm family meal before the root bridge hike. Budget ₹150–200 (~$1.80–$2.40 USD). No restaurant exists at Tyrna — the guesthouse arranges it the evening before.

Terrain and Difficulty
Road Surface
Assam and Meghalaya: mostly sound tarmac. Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland: rough, broken, unpaved, and river-gravel sections throughout. 40% off-tarmac overall. The 4x4 support vehicle is mandatory on this route.
Altitude
Main route maximum: ~1,500 m (4,921 ft) in the Shillong/Cherrapunji area. Tawang extension: Sela Pass at 4,170 m (13,681 ft). Mild AMS risk on Tawang. Acclimatize 1 day at Dirang (1,448 m / 4,750 ft) before ascending.
Skill Level
Advanced. Off-road experience required before arrival. A Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 or Hero Xpulse 200 handles the terrain well. Low-clearance cruisers will struggle on the broken sections in Arunachal — ground clearance is the deciding factor.
Distance
~1,800 km (1,118 miles) over 15–16 days. Some days push 200–270 km (124–168 miles). The support 4x4 carries spare parts, gear, and a fuel reserve for sections where petrol stations are not guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do foreign riders need a permit for Northeast India?
Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. RAP must be arranged through a registered tour operator — independent foreign entry is not permitted. We handle the full process with 4–7 days lead time. Nagaland and Meghalaya require no permit for any nationality.
What is the best time to ride Northeast India?
October to November is the most reliable window — post-monsoon green, 15–25°C (59–77°F), clear skies. First week of December adds the Hornbill Festival at Kisama, 12 km (7.5 miles) from Kohima — book accommodation 3–4 months ahead for that window. June–September is not recommended: Cherrapunji receives 12,000+ mm annually and slides affect Arunachal routes regularly.
How do we get motorcycles to Majuli Island?
Bikes load onto a flat wooden barge at Neemati Ghat near Jorhat. Ferry runs at 7:00am and 11:00am. The 7am crossing takes 75 minutes and puts you on Majuli by 8:15am. This is a functioning commercial barge — local passengers, goods, and occasionally livestock share the deck with the bikes.
What motorcycle works best for this route?
The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 or Hero Xpulse 200 4V. Ground clearance is the deciding factor on Arunachal roads. The Pasighat-to-Roing stretch covers 20 km (12 miles) of broken surface where clearance is the variable.
What is the Hornbill Festival and when does it run?
The Hornbill Festival runs the first week of December at Kisama Heritage Village, 12 km (7.5 miles) from Kohima. All 16 Naga tribes perform, demonstrate crafts, and cook simultaneously. No other event brings this range of Naga culture into one place.
For the higher-altitude Tawang corridor and Sela Pass (4,170 m / 13,681 ft), the Arunachal Pradesh motorcycle tour covers the western Arunachal army road network and Tawang Monastery approach. For a high-remoteness Himalayan comparison, see the Zanskar Valley expedition.
